Common Signs of a Veterinary Emergency:

  • Difficulty breathing (shortness of breath, increased effort, gagging, or choking)
  • Bleeding that does not stop, from any part of the body
  • Non-productive retching or vomiting
  • Distended, swollen, or painful abdomen
  • Prolonged or bloody vomiting or diarrhea
  • Seizures (first time, those lasting more than three minutes, or multiple recurring seizures)
  • Loss of balance or coordination
  • Collapse/loss of consciousness 
  • Lacerations, bite wounds, or other penetrating wounds
  • Ingestion of poison or foreign material
  • Inability or severe difficulty urinating or defecating
  • Pain
  • Hives, facial swelling
  • Inability or prolonged straining to deliver puppies or kittens
  • Lameness or non-weight bearing on any limb
